I watch a number of hunting & fishing shows and am an avid hunter and fisherman. North to Alaska is my favorate as is Larry Csonka! The atmosphere of Alaska, the game found there and the talent producing the shows makes for great episodes. Normally I wouldn't respond to something like this but for some reason I felt compelled to praise your work. Keep up the great work, you all do a wonderful job.

I am very greatful for Napa's North to Alaska. I especially like the fact that you go to far out places in Alaska. Three weeks ago I fished in the native village Togiak, AK on the Northern part of Bristol Bay. It was you show on the Nushagak River that got me thinking to try this area out. Well needless to say I caught 5 to 7 Lb. Rainbows that were released unharmed and there was a time that I caught Arctic Char nearly every cast on Togiak Lake. My arms were sore from catching so many fish. Thank you Larry, Audrey, and Smokey Joe for showing us the many different places that Alaska has to offer the avid sportsman. Respectfully, Thomas E. Thompson

We lived in the Greatland for 20-something years and still miss it dearly. I've watched the show a few times. but am now taping it so I don't miss ANY episodes! Really enjoyed every show so far; my only complaint would be the lack of discussion on techniques and/or tackle. For example, on the show I watched yesterday, Larry & Smoke were catching lake trout over in Labarge. I couldn't tell what lure they were using & don't remember them saying specifically. I realize this isn't truly a 'technical' show (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the show) but at least a brief mention of tackle in this case would have been helpful. We're heading back in August for 2 weeks of Mat Valley silvers. Maybe we'll see ya on the river sometime. Ron Hawkins rhak85@msn.com Hoover Dam, NV

Dear Larry, I use to love watching you play football but I love even more watching your North to Alaska episodes. Especially the fishing for halibut and cod. I'm 68 years old and probably will never take the trip so it's fun to watch you on TV. The only problem I have with that is I can't taste them good looking fish lying in the pan that Smokee Joe fixes. Thanks for listening. Vernon Gragg , graggve@charter.net

Well, you would think that a 48-year old college professor would have grown-up by now and lost the 'Zonkitis' that affected anybody who tried to look and run like Larry Csonka --- Larry Csonka is a fullback's fullback who taught a lot of us about the value of hard work and mental toughness -- something often missing with today's generation of college kids. This is a tremendous site and would be a great resource to teachers (i.e., pics, episodes, etc.) That prompts an idea: An educational link (with activities for children in grades 3-6) to parallel this site would be a cool edition since American History is a part of most upper-elementary curricula. This will be my 4th year straight, going up to Alaska. When I first starting going up North, I would tell my wife, man I wish there was just a show on Alaska. Little did I know the show was already out there. Then it was my second year up in Alaska, combat fishing on a river. No one is hooking any fish. Then it happened I HOOK into a nice KING, after about a 5 minute fight the fish was landed and someone yells out, man you just CSONKED that fish. After talking to the guy from about twenty miles from where I live, In Washington State. He tells me about North to Alaska. When I got home I found the show and have not missed one show since. I make sure to record all the reruns also. Love the show. Tight lines Jeremiah.

My Dad took my brother and I to the games when we were 6 and 7 so I got to see you play on the undefeated team coached by Dick Fortner. Actually got to see you both junior and senior year. Man, You were awesome back then, and I remember going to a game and sitting with my Dad and his Buddies and they said, "every major college scout is here tonight to see #32....My Dad said what's the kid's name....and that was the first time I heard....Larry Csonka". I've watched the show for years. Larry is a great individual and has made an impact in our world. We'll be visiting Alaska for hunting and fishing in '09, looking forward to journeying to some of the same areas we have seen in the show. I expect that our 14 yearold daughter will enjoy having a Blacktail on her wall, she's already a seasoned hunter. Best Wishes, Jim Rogers and Family, San Diego. jimmysixguns@sbcglobal.net

Larry and the entire North to Alaska crew, you guys are awesome. I love your show! It's beyond the normal run of the mill outdoor show. The landscape not to mention the waterscape of Alaska is breathtaking and surreal. It’s been one of my dreams to make the journey to Alaska some day with my family and every time I see your show, it wets my appetite all over again. By the way, my dream may be in the works within the next year (I hope). Indulge me for a minute while I explain. My dad wanted when my older brother and I were kids to take us on a fishing trip to Canada or Alaska but unfortunately he was never able to make this happen. This year he turns 70 in September and my brother and I want to take him. Neither of us wants to live with the thought that we never made this trip happen and now the responsibility falls on my brother and I to take our dad. Here is my question, you have fished all over Alaska, and through the lens of your show I have seem some great places you have fished. Where would be a great place to take our dad that would accomplish a reasonably moderate budget as well as a place that would not be to taxing on him physically? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. God bless and happy fishing, Rev. Tim Milligan Drake1tm@aol.com

Hello My name is Bill Tropf. My emails address is btropf1@aol.com I really enjoy watching Napa's NTA. I totally enjoy watching the enthusiasm Larry & Audry display whenever they hook any fish. I also enjoy how your show will focus on the lodge and guides. Bravo to Smokeejo. I like that he keeps the cooking simple and quick. Not much room for improvement. I would suggest that maybe a little more humor be included in each episode. While I am out fishing with friends we always bring some sort of humor to the day. I also would like to comment on the videotographers, they know how to capture the surroundings of an area. Excellent show, I look forward to watching every weekend. Keep up the good work. - BT

Larry and Audrey; Fantastic show, I try to watch every episode. I enjoy the humor you both bring to the show, the atmosphere, the scenery and the wildlife. What I appreciate most is the respect to the wildlife that you demonstrate. Barbless hooks and a gentle handling of the fish caught should be used in more shows like North to Alaska. yes, by all means lets keep some for Smokeejoe and the gang, but the fish you release will continue to thrive! My son and I are going to Alaska for 8 days in July. We will be part of a 26 person group of Boy Scouts. I have seen Mr. Csonka on several fishing and hunting adventures in Alaska and I am using his shows to help plan some of the areas we must see. A recent show fishing for trout, another on fishing for Salmon, and tonight on Wrangell St. Elias hunt for sheep. Mr. Csonka's shows give a wonderful look at Alaska while showing some hunting or fishing. I would appreciate any suggestions Mr. Csonka has for this once in a life time trip that we will be going on. Mr. Csonka, I "grew up" in Pleasantville, NY with the GIANTS when they had their training camp there at PACE in the 70's. You were my favourite player, so you can imagine the thrill for a kid to learn his here was coming to New York. I was more blown away to walk into FOLEY's one day after school and find you having a beer with my old man, Joe Burrows. My brother taught me how to play fullback based on watching you. I held on to the ball with both hands, ran hard, always kept driving my legs, and never quit. My high school friends swear they never saw me fumble once. Ever. Go figure my adult adventures have brought me fishing up in Alaska for salmon a few times plus subartic Canada for trout and the high arctic for char. Thanks for the memories, #39. You are still my favorite player. -Scott Burrows (sburrows_391@comcast.net)

Improve your catch and release techniques. Use single barbless hooks.

Date: Saturday, February 16, 2008
Time: 12:10 AM

Comments

some of the guides and participants of your show are not handling the fish properly for release. fingers inside the gill plates, holding a large fish by the tail and ripping out treble hooks with pliers from inside the mouth imbrdded in the tongue are sure fire fish killers. Any bleeding of the gills is a dead fish. Holding fish out of water for prolonged display for a camera is bad stuff. The use of fish handling gloves is a bad p0ractice. Barbless single hooks are the choice of real sportsmen that practice catch and release. Carefull hook removal, minimum handling and quick return to the water are basics to start with. Your show does some of the poorest fish handling I have ever seen.

Producer Comments:

We appreciate your comments and concerns and agree that fish handling techniques are important when releasing fish.  While we do release many fish, we also enjoy keeping fish as well.  We grill, bake, fry and sometimes smoke our catch with nothing EVER going to waste.  While our release techniques may not always be perfect, we certainly do our best to ensure fish are handled properly when being released.  In the case of king salmon (chinook) there are strict Fish and Game regulations on proper handling.  But rest assured, the silver salmon (coho) Larry held up for the camera was kept and enjoyed by all at the lodge that night.

I was seated with a gal and a guy friend, and you had 2 women and another gentleman at the table. We ate, we drank, and you told jokes. I had a blast and will never forget it. Hi Larry: Cheering on the Giants & took a break to ask: where can I find that photo of you (did I make this up?) that I remember from when I was a kid: you, with a guy on each arm, each leg, and still making yards? You were, and remain, an inspiration to me, never stop making ground no matter how much things may suck. In and after college we had a kind of theatre group, a cross between that and a band, kind of guerilla performances, but held to an exacting standards. The '72 Dolphins were our model. We each identified with one of you; one of us was the Griese, another Mercury Morris, Kick, etc. I was our Csonka. I just never, never stopped. Insofar as a hero is someone you look to in order to find some way to go forward when otherwise you wouldn't, you're one of mine. (Don't let it give you a fat head.) And that photo was the image I had in my head during those times. Best, Curt (curthopkins @ gmail.com)

Dear Larry and Company, I would just like to say thank you for the outstanding show. As a fellow Buckeye originally from Columbiana Ohio and retired USAF Master Sergeant who did 2 tours up at Eielson AFB just outside of Fairbanks, it really makes me homesick but still makes me relize why I want to eventully retire back up there for good. I miss it so bad but still I have a duty to take care of my Mom and Dad for now. Please keep up the great work and hopefully someday we'll cross paths, Jeff Taylor f4djt@sssnet.com

Thank you for putting together such a diverse outdorr sporting show. Even though the show may have it's ups and downs with weather conditions and game being harvested, I find it to be real and a wonderful opportunty to see all Alaska outdoors has to offer. You don't necessarily just focus on all the "perfect" conditions of the fish or hunt. I will continue to watch you weekly. Repeats or New adventures, you are my outdoor sporting show of choice. Oh, and Smookie Joe's cooking tips and recipes are a wonderful addition to cooking even local meats and fish. Thank you again. Linwood Cowan lcowancalif@sbcglobal.net

I am the wife of a life long fan of Mr. Csonka. My husband has enjoyed football ever since he was able to speak. Then really got into at the age of nine when he saw Mr. Csonka play. He actually had the privilage in seeing Csonka, and hearing him speak. And, was thrilled to have Mr. Csonka sign one of his photos and then had it framed. He also has a letter from Mr. Csonka just in show of appriciation. My husband Tod, is now 43 and has a son of his own, who is 5. And, yes he is also a football player already just as his dad was. And, little Tod's room is decorated in Miami Dolphins, wall paper, paint the whole thing right down to a teal blue dolphin locker we picked up. I cannot wait for the show to air, what channel will it be on? and when in March? Both my Tod's will be so excited. I'm not going to tell Tod about it, just would like to make it a surprise. By the way, Larry sure looks good. But then again he always has. I am sure along with all the other phins, Mr. Csonka isn't liking the Patriots right now. Thanks for reading. Hi Larry-- Thought I would check out your site. I talked with Grandma the other day and she said you were involved in all sorts of NEW exciting activities!.. I wanted to show my daughter Caitlen your site--she is 10 years old. It excites her to know she has a famous ex football player in the family! hahaha :) The last time I saw you was at Uncle Charlie's Retirement Party in 1987. I was 16 years old. Time flies by wayyyyyyyyy to fast. My husband and I reside in AZ. Mom and Dad moved here 13 years ago to Paradise Valley. Dad passed away in 2001, but Mom stayed here. My sister (Linda) lives here also with her huband and children. Mike still lives in Ohio (Brimfield) with his wife and children. We go back for visits twice a year. I would love to see you and visit for dinner if you are ever in AZ, or if we are back in Ohio we can schedule it the same time and we can meet at your sports complex! It looks like alot of fun there!!... Loved your site! Looks like all is well with you!. Take Care, Love and Miss you--- *Nicole & Family xoxo

Wow. It is gret to see how my childhood and teenage idol is going. Growing up in New Jersey I had Csonka shirts and posters and mychildhood friend Billy had Jim Kiick gear-together we were Butch and Sundance. In town and High school football we were 39 and 21. I was fortunate to see Larry play at Shea against the Jets as well as Giant stadium when he played with Doug Kotar on the Giants. I am now a physician practicing and lecturing on Preventive Medicine living in Vero Beach Florida and would be delighted, even at 44 years old to meet Larry Csonka and if he is interested join his lecture circuit discussing nutrition, exercise and Preventive Medicine. I am going to contact The Dolphins organiztion and Bill Parcells about providing nutritional counseling for an athletic competative edge. Larry Csonka tought me the great virtues of being tenacious, unwavering, team effort, toughness and a focussed and determined work ethic which I have used all my life, including during medical school and continue to use in my daily life. Thank you Larry Csonka.!! Sincerely, Dr. Chris Olenek FACOFP olenekc@bellsouth.net 975 Beacon Lane Vero Beach,Florida 32963 772-559-2444, 772-234-8540

Larry, Great outdoors show. Growing up in South Florida I spent many hours fishing and enjoying the outdoors myself. I am also a huge Miami Dolphins fan, been that way since I was knee high to a gasshopper. Nothing like the 72 Dolphins. Even today I am still true to the team. I grew up watching you along with Jim Kick, Mercury Morris, Bob Griese and rest of the mighty dolphins. You were a fantastic running back with a phenomenal career. If I am not mistaken your yardage still stands. Currently I am serving in Iraq as a Battalion Command Sergeant Major in the 4/25th Airborne Brigade out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. Larry,I just wanted to say it is so good to finally shows the(real alaska!!!) I have lived and played over much of this awesome state,It is nice to see that you have done some shows on kodiak Island, I was lucky enough to spend an entire summer working, (ha ha.) I was on the west side of Kodiak, getting to share streams with those giant kodiak Bears, and fishing till my arms were sore, even for alaska standards Kodiak is a world of its own,as i am sure you know,it is an island that in most of its landscape has not changed over hundreds of years. By the way i am a 27yr alaskan and i wanted to say i think it is great that you live up here now,as the old alaskan saying goes, wonce a person has been to Alaska, everyplace else becomes flat an insipid.Stuck in juneau to work for the alaska marine hyway ferry boats. i will move back to Kodiak someday. I hope you plan on some more shows from the "emeraled Isle".Troy, fisheadak2003@yahoo.com

Hi Larry, Just want to say thanks for all the great football memories. I remember like it was yesterday when the Miami Dolphins came to play the New Orleans Saints in Tulane Stadium in 1972 on their way to their undefeated season and crushed the Saints 21-0. Really enjoy your North to Alaska show and I hope to visit Alaska during the summer of 2008. I have heard that once you get there you don't want to leave. I love your show, every time I watch it I am reminded of all the good times I had when I was in the Coast Guard in Kodiak, Ak. There was lots of fishing, hiking, and 4-wheelin. I just wish that OLN/VERSUS would air more freshwater Pacific Northwest fishing shows. I mean c'mon, anyone can catch a Bass. But Salmon, Steelhead, Halibut, Cod etc... That's a different story. And you know, there just isn't that much warm water fishing in the pacific northwest which is where I watch your show. Would like to see more NTA with Larry&Audry.

My father was teaching school in Barrow, Alaska in 1968 when I was born. I was born in March and we moved back to the lower 48 in the summer of that same year. I have watched your show for several years now, hoping to get a glimpse of what Barrow, Alaska has become. I want to thank you for the special you filmed about "Barrow Whaling". It was great to see some of the town and learn a little more about the way of life up there. Based on the pictures I have and my father's stories, Barrow has not changed much. They have some new technology, but have kept many of the same traditions. I hope to return some day and see for myself, but until then, your special will have to do. Thank you again.

When I watch outdoor shows its nice to have a short piece included about the method/equipment used (ie flasher and fly, decoy and placement...). It makes the show much more educational. Especially when I watch with my children. Do you have any information about fly fishing for salmon in saltwater. I'm going to Craig, Ak at the end of July and want to give it a try. Me father and I have fished with the same guide for years and they have an assume set up. They also fish out of Panama when the Alaska season is done. What brute force going thru the lines - thank you for that. Love the fishing part best. Loved the last one where you Larry thought the fish broke the lure off and was really below the boat. Larry: Love the show! Also wanted to give you kuddos for your work with Project Alaska. Cathy Parker is my sister, and I was blown away when she told about your offers to help with the fund raising effort. You probably have no idea how much impact your speech to the kids at Barrow High School had on the village. Cathy continues to get calls and letters from the people of the village regarding the positive impact the team has had on their sons. I have included a link to the project web site so that your other viewers can enjoy the story. There are links to the ESPN video which just won an Emmy. There is talk about a movie, and I hope they cast you to give your speech. Hopefully the ultimate legacy of this saga is for us to see Barrow Whaler run out the tunnel to play in the Super Bowl! I just want to thank you guys for doing such a great show on Kennecott Copper Mine! My husband and I were in Alaska back in September '06 for 2 weeks (to get married) and we made the 90 mile trip down the McCarthy Road in a 24 foot RV - holy cow! Took us forever.... and the Kuskulana Bridge... yikes! By the time we made it to McCarthy, we were too exhausted to walk to Kennecott and it was getting dark. We were there late September and it was like a ghost town. I was so glad to see your show and you did such a great job with the history of the area. Made me wish we did make the trek.... Producer Comments:

Mike...

The Kennicott Copper Mine is, we feel, an intricate and interesting part of Alaska's history.  It's also now the site and headquarters for a lot of Alaskan outback adventures (Kennicott Activities episode - aired a few weeks ago).  We certainly enjoy bringing all the great fishing and hunting from Alaska to our viewers, but would not do Alaska or our show justice if we didn't also expose it's huge history and culture.  We feel the amazing history of the state must be recognized for one to fully appreciate any Alaska experience- even its fishing and hunting.  We received positive comments from many viewers on this episode but realize we can't always please everyone.  Thanks for your comments and we hope you continue to enjoy other parts of our series.

I LOVE the show! And SmokeeJo's recipes are awesome! I spent a lot of time in Alaska during my career in the Air Force and got to see a few of the places he and the crew have been. It brings back a lot of wonderful memories. Thank you! Lawrence W. Hahn USAF, Retired

I would like to thank you for the show. We try to go to Alaska every year. Your show helps get us through the time that we are in Idaho and craving Alaska. We like to charter with Ninilchik Charter, Mike and his crew are great. I recommend you try chartering with them sometime. Again thank you. Kyle Belnap (kwbelnap@yahoo.com)

Dear Larry and Audra, It was a real pleasure to get to meet you both at the Homer Winter King Tournament .As I mentioned when we 1stmet at Duggan's pub,I watch your show when ever I can Especially during the winter when I want to be steelheading but all the rivers here are frozen.I was glad to hear that you both caught fish.Heck, I was glad to have caught the 2 white Kings that I did.No money fish but it was still a great day to be on the water.I hope you both had as much fun as the folks on our boat did. Like I told you at Duggan's and again at Duncan House Resturant if you ever feel like getting away from the crowds, the lights, and the cameras give me a call when you come thru Soldotna and I'd be happy to take you out on the Kenai or the Kasilof in my driftboat.I'm not a professional guide and don't want to be,plus I have a lot to learn about the good holes on the Kenai Peninsula but I have fished for salmon and steelhead for 26 years on the Olympic Peninsula and have caught my share of fish. Not to brag....but....my best King was 78.3 lbs. on the Humptulips River in 2002. Regardless of whether ya'll come fishin with me, it was a great pleasure to meet you both. You are sincere and very genuine people that I'd be most pleased to call friends.Best of luck in the future, hope to see you on the water. We are hooked big time on NTA as we head NTA as well for our anual silver salmon fishing trip to ketchikan's Grant Island at the Silverking Lodge, Clover Pass Resort, or Cedar's Lodge, all owned by 3 of our friends. Watching your top notch shows get us all excited for September when we go! Love your shows, your website, and your whole crew who do a super job highlighting the beautiful Alaska. Always a pleasure to watch! Kaz Nishimura and Julie Moore. juliem9876@aol.com From Lake Tapps, WA.
